HULL CREATIVE SKILLS & HERITAGE CIC

Creative skills for today.
Preserving heritage for tomorrow.

Hull Creative Skills & Heritage CIC is the community organisation now based at the Vauxhall Tavern, 1 Hessle Road, bringing together local heritage, a working community pub and café, and practical creative learning, modern technology, enterprise and the stories that make Hull unique.

Hull Creative Skills & Heritage CIC continues as our practical skills and learning programme — photography, design, AI, print, laser engraving, CNC, 3D making, personalisation and routes into enterprise.

★ OUR FIRST HERITAGE PROJECT
HessleRoad.com
Hessle Road — Old & New

HessleRoad.com is the first project being developed by Hull Creative Skills & Heritage CIC. It is growing into a living digital archive celebrating the people, fishing heritage, pubs, shops, photographs, memories and everyday stories of Hessle Road — while also recording the community of today for future generations.

This project shows exactly what the CIC is about: using creative and digital skills to preserve local history, involve the community and turn knowledge into something lasting.

Get involved

Help us build a lasting Hessle Road legacy.

HCSH CIC is being designed to stand on several legs: grants, sponsorship, local business support, heritage products, workshops, events, donations and income from the tavern and café. There are practical ways to help from day one.

Business sponsorship

Local businesses can become founding supporters, sponsor exhibitions, rooms, equipment or community activity, and be recognised in the centre and on HessleRoad.com.

Advertise on HessleRoad.com

Business listings, enhanced directory entries, sponsored heritage features and website advertising can support the project while promoting local firms.

Donate skills or materials

Decorating, signage, printing, building materials, technology, furniture, archive material and professional help can reduce the amount we need to raise in cash.

Share photographs & memories

Help build the archive with family photographs, fishing stories, pub memories, documents and knowledge of Hessle Road people and places.

Volunteer

As the project develops we will need people interested in heritage, welcoming visitors, events, digitisation, workshops and community activity.

Become a founding supporter

Individuals and organisations will be able to support HCSH CIC and receive recognition as part of the project's founding community.

Why this CIC exists

More than forty years of knowledge, shared forward.

Founded from Shaun Langley’s journey through school darkrooms, professional photography, computers, printing, digital manufacturing and AI, Hull Creative Skills & Heritage CIC is designed to preserve practical heritage while opening new routes into creativity and enterprise.

It will welcome young people, adults changing direction, retired professionals, makers, small businesses and anyone who needs encouragement to begin.

“Experience becomes a legacy only when it is shared.”

A visual, practical community

See the kind of world we are building.

Hull Creative Skills & Heritage CIC will connect photography, digital creativity, making and enterprise. Its online identity will carry the same energetic visual language across the website, Facebook, YouTube and future printed materials.

Meet the Founding Mentor

Experience becomes a legacy only when it is shared.

Shaun Langley’s journey began in a school darkroom and continued through professional photography, early computing, graphic design, commercial printing, personalised manufacture, laser engraving and artificial intelligence.

Hull Creative Skills & Heritage CIC is being developed to pass that practical knowledge forward — not as a museum of the past, but as a launchpad for people who want to create their own future.

Built with encouragement, loyalty and teamwork

This vision could not have developed without the extraordinary support of Shaun’s partner, Raven, who has cared for him, encouraged him and stood beside him throughout the last eighteen years. Her belief and support have helped make it possible for Shaun to keep moving forward.

Shaun is also deeply grateful to two close friends. Helen is helping to bring structure to the project with exceptional organisational ability, turning a growing collection of ideas into practical actions. Alan has been learning many of Shaun’s creative and technical skills, providing valuable help while also giving the project an early opportunity to develop and test its approach to mentoring.

Hull Creative Skills & Heritage CIC is founded on one of its central beliefs: meaningful things are rarely built by one person alone. Creative skills, practical learning and heritage preservation now sit together under one clear CIC identity.

“The greatest investment we can make is not in technology, but in people.”

A message from the Founder

Create • Learn • Preserve • Inspire

Founder’s foreword

Hull Creative Skills & Heritage CIC began with a simple but powerful belief: creativity belongs to everyone. People should not be excluded from learning because they lack experience, confidence, equipment or the right connections. The CIC is being developed as a welcoming organisation where people of different ages and backgrounds can discover what they are capable of through practical, supportive and inspiring experiences.

Our first heritage project is HessleRoad.com — Hessle Road: Old & New. It is the CIC’s first practical heritage initiative, bringing together community history, photography, storytelling and creative skills.

This is not only a building filled with machines and materials. It is intended to be a community in which ideas are encouraged, mistakes are part of learning and achievement builds genuine confidence. Our ambition is to help people move from curiosity to skill, from skill to opportunity and, where appropriate, from opportunity to employment or enterprise.

“Hull Creative Skills & Heritage CIC will bring together heritage skills, modern creative technology and practical enterprise support—helping people turn imagination into confidence, products, portfolios and brighter futures.”

Why the CIC matters

Many people have creative ability but have never had the opportunity to develop it. Others are isolated, rebuilding confidence, changing career, leaving education, approaching retirement or seeking a practical route into self-employment. The CIC will respond by offering accessible learning that feels purposeful and connected to real life.

Creative participation can strengthen wellbeing, encourage connection and provide a sense of progress. Practical education can also lead to recognised skills, portfolios, saleable products and new income. By placing these outcomes within one supportive environment, the CIC can become a bridge between personal development, community participation and economic opportunity.

Our vision

To become a nationally recognised community creative hub that preserves valuable traditional skills, embraces emerging technologies and empowers people to learn, make, connect and build sustainable opportunities.

Inclusive

Open and welcoming to young people, adults, families, older learners and community groups.

Practical

Learning through real equipment, real materials, guided projects and visible achievement.

Forward-looking

Combining traditional making with digital fabrication, artificial intelligence and modern creative workflows.

Enterprising

Helping learners progress towards portfolios, products, employment and micro-businesses.

Our mission

  • Inspire creativity
  • Build practical skills
  • Increase confidence
  • Support wellbeing
  • Encourage enterprise
  • Strengthen community
  • Preserve heritage skills
  • Embrace new technology

What people will be able to learn

The learning offer will grow in stages and will be shaped by demand, available equipment, partnerships and the needs of the community.

Photography & visual media

Film and digital photography, studio lighting, restoration, editing, product imagery and visual storytelling.

Maker technology

Laser cutting and engraving, 3D printing, CNC methods, vinyl, product finishing and safe workshop practice.

Printing & textiles

Creative printing, garment decoration, embroidery, sewing, personalised products and production workflows.

AI & digital creativity

Responsible use of artificial intelligence for ideas, images, video, communication and creative productivity.

Enterprise

Branding, pricing, product photography, online selling, customer service and micro-business development.

Community activity

Short workshops, collaborative projects, demonstrations, exhibitions and opportunities to learn together.

Who HCSH is for

Hull Creative Skills & Heritage CIC is intended for people at many different stages: a school leaver searching for direction; an adult considering a career change; a parent hoping to develop a flexible income; a retired person wanting to learn and connect; a maker who needs access to equipment; or somebody who simply wants to rebuild confidence through creativity.

No single route will suit everyone. The CIC’s role will be to help each person identify a suitable starting point and a realistic next step.

From learning to opportunity

Introductory sessions will help people explore safely and without pressure. Structured workshops will develop practical competence. Project-based learning will produce tangible outcomes. Learners who wish to progress further will be encouraged to build portfolios, develop products, understand pricing and test ideas for employment or enterprise.

Community impact

We want the CIC to reduce isolation, improve confidence, support lifelong learning and encourage people to participate in their community. Over time, we also hope to create volunteering routes, placements, mentoring opportunities, exhibitions and partnerships with schools, charities, businesses and public organisations.
